So, of course, when I thought about it, I would never have countenanced the idea of a termination. Open: Weston, pictured back in the Falklands, has commanded huge respect for speaking about his ordeal. It took a few minutes for the penny to drop as to quite how advanced it was. She was seven months pregnant: in just two months our eldest, our bright boy James, would be a dad. This second shock was almost as profound as the news itself: we had only eight weeks to adjust to the idea that we were to be grandparents.

How could it be, we wanted to know, that Almanita had been to see us days before and had shown no outwards signs of being pregnant? She had not put on weight. Actually, she had appeared to lose it. The extraordinary thing is, James told us, she had no notion that she was expecting a baby either. You hear about these strange, symptomless pregnancies, and hers was one of them. It had only been confirmed by her doctor a few days before we were told about it.
So when the shock had subsided along with the tears and recriminations, I started to think calmly and rationally. What could we, as grandparents, do to help James and Almanita raise their baby? Actually, there was much support, both practical and emotional, we could give.
Between us, Lucy, Faye and I share a wealth of wisdom and experience: I knew we could help provide the love and care, the network of family connections on which every child thrives. And our extended family stretches back to great-grandparents with their own store of knowledge and understanding.
My mum Pauline, 71, still has the common sense and practicality she learned as a district nurse. Her philosophical attitude surprised me. But no contemplation; no amount of prescience, planning or insight could have prepared any one of us for the vast, life-changing and wonderful impact our grandson would have on all our lives.
Most profound of all has been the effect his birth has had on my second son, his Uncle Stuart.
Stuart has always been an incredibly exciting and excitable young man. He is the maverick of the family — while we all support Manchester United, for example, his allegiance remains with Arsenal — and I see much of the young me in him. His mid-teens were fractious and worrying times for Lucy and me. When he was 15 he lost interest in his education, made a perfunctory stab at his GCSEs — he was lucky to pass a few of them without making any effort — then dropped out of school. The lines of communication broke down. Any advice I offered him, he construed as criticism. In truth, he rejected Lucy and me.
He had no sense of purpose and scant sense of where he belonged in life. The most abiding sadness for me was knowing that he rejected us. It was among the most difficult times of my life and I knew I was perilously close to losing him. He had just lost his way. Then, on September 3 last year, Zachary came along and gave me back my relationship with Stuart.
How could a baby exert such influence? Parenthood has given James and Almanita purpose and maturity. At weekends James takes his share of fatherly duties and often, to our great delight, will stay with Zachary at our house.
Memories: Weston pictured next to the war memorial on the Falklands - his life has been enhanced more since the birth of his grandson. Stuart has watched his brother adapt to fatherhood.

He sees that James is a good role model to his son; he knows Zachary will one day have reason to feel proud of the young parents who raised him. And this made Stuart look at himself and see a wealth of wasted potential. This new objective has fired him up no end. We are extremely happy to invite them back to play an amazing.
